west stow anglo-saxon village located on north bank of river lark, adjacent village of west stow in western part of suffolk. situated on small hill 15 feet (4.6 m) in height, have been noticeably prominent in surrounding landscape; hill formed core sand dune developed around during 14th century , sharply drops on prevailing side while gradually sloping on side faces prevailing winds. steep southern slope accentuated ditch @ base, marks edge of river s flood plain.


the surrounding landscape appears today radically different landscape have surrounded area in iron age , medieval periods. land north , east of west stow anglo-saxon village has been heavily modified during construction of bury sewage farms, north-east corner of site having been partly destroyed gravel pit in 1950s. mid-1980s, rubbish dumps surrounded site had been converted country park, landscape being regenerated sedge, grass, birch , oak. site of settlement bisected row of pine trees had been planted in 19th century.


the solid geology of lark valley chalk, patches of boulder clay forms high plateau capped sands , gravels in west stow , icklingham. site 7 miles west town of bury st. edmunds.
