astana s leader giro kreuziger. though had ridden 6 previous grand tours , finished in top ten @ tour de france twice, first time riding giro, former team liquigas–doimo inevitably had else in mind leadership @ italian tour. first time kreuziger had ridden unquestioned leader in grand tour. both leadership , access giro central kreuziger s signing astana in offseason. team of experienced domestiques, along kiserlovski, tenth place finisher @ 2010 giro d italia, named ride in support. kreuziger s goal finish on podium.


the team began giro poor team time trial, finishing 17th of 23 teams, putting kreuziger 50 seconds off race lead. kreuziger made each of day s selections in stage 5, hilly stage numerous sectors of unpaved or white roads, , finished race s top riders 8 seconds of day s winner , new race leader pieter weening. result moved kreuziger 42 places, 70th 18th, though time gap race leader remained close same. kreuziger took 1 of time bonuses 2 days later on montevergine di mercogliano, race s top riders narrowly missed taking last breakaway rider bart de clercq on giro s first summit finish. while belgian won stage, kreuziger s third-place ride moved him further classification, 14th. kreuziger, rest of field, outclassed alberto contador on mount etna in stage 9, despite finishing 50 seconds vaulted higher in standings, entering top ten overall first time, @ seventh. gained white jersey best young rider after stage. held position in stage 11, unexpectedly became stage overall classification riders despite contador s hints may cede pink jersey on day. michele scarponi s lampre–isd leading strong chase, kreuziger finished sixth on day, amongst race s top riders, remain seventh overall.


kreuziger, along of race s best riders, again out-distanced contador on grossglockner, next summit finish. finished sixth on day, losing on minute , half. attrition other riders meant moved fifth overall, though 3 , half minutes down on contador, time gap unlikely recouped. kreuziger faltered badly next day on stage ending @ monte zoncolan. distant 16th on day, losing 3 , half minutes stage winner igor antón, more importantly losing between 2 , 3 minutes race s other top riders. fell down ninth overall result. regained 1 position next day ninth place on gardeccia, again lost time race s other leading riders. because ag2r–la mondiale rider hubert dupont fell position above kreuziger in standings. kreuziger finished sixth in climbing time trial nevegal, since climb relatively short, time gaps among top riders small, , remained eighth overall result.


the team took 1 stage win in stage 19. tiralongo, perhaps kreuziger s top support rider, attacked out of leading group 7 km (4.3 mi), uphill, finish in macugnaga. after other riders tried bridge him never made way, contador made way front of race , rode beside tiralongo several moments. shared few words, , contador patted veteran italian on encouraged him take stage win himself. tiralongo did so, first race win of 12-year career. contador, had ridden last 3 seasons astana, remembered tiralongo friend , valued support rider, , wanted thank him hard work done on spaniard s behalf. day 1 kreuziger, eighth place on day moved him seventh overall. kreuziger 16th in stage 21 time trial in milan, poor showing him. since josé rujano, man had been directly ahead of him in overall standings, vastly inferior time trialist (46th on day), kreuziger moved past him finish giro in sixth place overall. while did fall short of goal finish on podium, kreuziger nonetheless added grand tour top ten , best young rider jersey palmarès. squad finished winners of trofeo fast team, traditional team classification times team s top 3 riders added each day. finished ten minutes better of movistar team.
