natural resources

palmer owner of mineralogy, company in 2006 had 160 billion tonnes (160×10^ long tons; 180×10^ short tons) of iron ore reserves in pilbara ranges, in remote northern western australia. in 2008, palmer bought waratah coal. in 2009, bought queensland nickel , palmer nickel , cobalt refinery after bhp going close refinery, , thousands of jobs have been lost. in first year after purchasing refinery, palmer gifted staff 50 mercedes benz cars , thousands of overseas holidays after refinery turned huge profit. palmer , management team have since faced significant challenges cost of nickel dropping on $7 per pound around $3.70 per pound. on 18 january 2016, queensland nickel entered voluntary administration after price of nickel crashed in october 2015 , queensland government refused assistance.


football

palmer purchased gold coast united soccer club in 2008. in october 2009, made decision cap attendances of gold coast united home games @ skilled park stadium 5,000, in bid save money avoiding transport subsidies on crowds on 5,000. after widespread backlash , 2,616 fans attending next home game, , intervention of football federation australia (ffa), idea scrapped.


on 29 february 2012, ben buckley , frank lowy announced palmer s licence gold coast united fc revoked constant breaches of ffa rules , regulations , sought pay out contracts of players remaining month of season. lowy stated acted in order protect integrity of sport. however, palmer stipulated contest decisions through legal action , claimed lowy dictator. despite ruling ordering removal of freedom of speech logos on team shirts, palmer indicated remain. on 2 march 2012, palmer lost supreme court bid against gold coast united s expulsion a-league.


in 2012, after ffa revoked gold coast united a-league licence, palmer founded football australia  – competing organisation sport of football in australia. ffa adopted number of changes football australia had proposed.


other activities

in june 2002, palmer appointed adjunct professor of business @ deakin university s faculty of business , law, role held until 2006. during time, delivered series of lectures part of deakin s mba residential programs. in 2008, palmer appointed adjunct professor of management @ bond university on gold coast.


in december 2012, palmer appointed secretary general of world leadership alliance, democracy-promoting council included former president bill clinton , myanmar s opposition leader aung san suu kyi. palmer named president of alliance s business chapter, world economic council.


in december 2012, on christmas day, palmer hosted buffet lunch 650 disadvantaged people, children , families.


on 4 march 2012, palmer named, amid controversy, national living treasure new south wales branch of national trust of australia.


in april 2012, announced had signed memorandum of understanding csc jinling shipyard construct replica of rms titanic, titanic ii. ship built in china , set sail in late 2016, later postponed 2018. palmer added on 150 animatronic dinosaurs resort in coolum, creating largest dinosaur park in world.


in 2015, palmer donated house, car , food victims of house fire in beenleigh saw son tragically lose life. family lost owned , palmer ensured had roof on heads, food, furniture, , toys surviving children.

in february 2013, @ press conference in new york, palmer announced plans build modern-day replica of liner rms titanic. planned titanic ii built in china , make maiden voyage southampton new york city in 2016 (later postponed 2018). palmer hoped recreate titanic closely possible familiar external , internal appearances. according palmer, titanic ii 883 feet long, weigh 55,800 gross tons , carry 2,435 passengers , 900 crew. palmer said titanic ii honour memories of died , survived on titanic. titanic operated white star line , palmer s cruise company named blue star line.


during first half of 2015, evidence accumulated suggesting project had been abandoned. in march reported no work had begun or been ordered in chinese shipyard identified site of construction workers highly skeptical project ever move beyond proposal stage. on 26 march 2015, blue star line trademark listed abandoned . blue star line had last updated official website in may 2014. in may 2016 reported administrators bankrupt palmer company, queensland nickel, no significant money had been spent on development of titanic ii in on 2 years.

palmer announced plans build park features animatronic dinosaurs. palmer ordered more 160 animatronic dinosaurs, included initial shipment of 3.5-metre (11 ft) tall, 20-metre (66 ft) long t. rex, nicknamed jeff . palmer received full council approval park on 25 july 2013, , expected open public in 2014. on 14 december 2013, dinosaur park, called palmersaurus , opened public, terri, bindi , bob irwin guests of honour.
