captain pugwash

the pompous likeable captain of black pig. although boasts of being bravest buccaneer , quite cowardly , stupid. greed gets him trouble. nevertheless, wins day – either of tom cabin boy or sheer luck. despite being pirate, seen committing acts of piracy.


master mate

a dopey character, has tendency use malapropisms , mispronounce common words. has teddy bear in bunk , quite mild-mannered. not entirely clear why mate, not appear have authority on rest of crew. present in first ever pugwash story, in depicted being sleepy. pugwash s adenoidal pronunciation of character s name appears main source of urban legend characters sexually suggestive names.


barnabas

the aggressive of pirates, in reality harmless. quite rebellious , grumpy, , perhaps marginally more intelligent willy, mate or captain. not present in 1997 series.


willy

a simple sailor wigan. appears youngest crew member (apart tom). gentle soul, , against using violence. does, however, have occasional brainwave , has been crew s saviour (admittedly more luck design). wait till wigan – won t half have tail tell!


tom cabin boy

it might argued without tom, pugwash have been sunk long ago. intelligent , resourceful member of crew, 1 can cook , 1 can sail ship. although pugwash never admit it, tom s ability think schemes thing prevents him being total failure pirate. rest of crew found unable operate without tom, after left captain when crew mutinied. tom expert concertina player, despite being 19th-century anachronism 18th-century pirate, , part of repertoire trumpet hornpipe (the captain pugwash theme).


he portrayed home counties accent in first television adaptation, , irish accent in 1997 series.


cut-throat jake

captain pugwash s fearsome arch-enemy, captain of flying dustman (a pun on flying dutchman combined reference occupation of dustman). when not scheming bring pugwash s downfall, rather more competent pirate enemy, , seems have plenty of treasure. speaks stereotypical west country accent, , recognisable eye patch , enormous black beard.

jonah

this character replaced pirate barnabas, featured in earlier series. catchphrase no come of this, mark words! jonah appears of jamaican origin. tallest of crew hits head on ceiling of ship s lower deck. 1 of strongest of crew serves black pig s carpenter.



governor of portobello

this character lives @ top of island in mansion covered in vines. talks quietly , head of guard, lt. scratchwood, acts megaphone. in love donna bonanza , attends every need.



maggie lafayette

this pirate queen appeared in second series when hijacked captain s ship escape authorities.



swine

an australian pirate works jake. has mug of grog in hand. character appeared in original series, never spoke, nor named.



stinka

a mexican works jake speaks little english. repeats jake says, annoying him greatly. again, character unnamed, unspeaking character in earlier series.



lieutenant scratchwood

the voice governor , law town of portobello. in charge of guard , collecting taxes, spends time chasing thieves.
