georgios kalafatis


the volleyball department of panathinaikos founded in 1919 , 1 of first in greece. participation of giorgos kalafatis in inter-allied games of paris in 1919, , informations collected, sport became more known in greece. same year officials of club decided creation of volleyball team.


the first dynamic presence of team dated in years 1927–29 many popular players of time such founder giorgos kalafatis, historical member of board apostolos nikolaidis, players such athanasios aravositas, goumas, arg. nikolaidis, papageorgiou , papastefanou. in following years interest volleyball became less until before world war ii when panathinaikos presented powerful team leader players such lambrou, vallidis, momferatos, tzoumanis, proselentis, lykouris, kakridis , more.


during 60’s , 70’s, panathinaikos volleyball club won many titles , honors due fact team roster has included of leading volleyball players , coaches in greece. first , popular generation of players of 60’s andreas , nikos bergeles, iliopoulos, leloudas, chasapis, emmanouil, perros , fotiou opened road next generations. notable coaches of era leading figure of department gerasimos theodoratos, yugoslavian sava grozdanović , later ex-player of team andreas bergeles.


the important achievement of team participation in final of european cup in 1980 grozdanović coach , players such georgantis, agrapidakis, iliopoulos, papadopoulos, malousaris, gountakos, astras, kokkinaras , koliopoulos. in following years, panathinaikos team continued dominate greek championship janusz badora coach , players such kazazis, tentzeris, gontikas, galakos, dimitriadis, margaronis, karamaroudis , andreopoulos.


two of successful periods have been 1994-95 , 1995-96 seasons, when panathinaikos won 2 consecutive championships stelios prosalikas head coach , andreopoulos, triantafillidis, filippov, spanos, hatziantoniou, ouzounov, a. kovacev, s. kovacev, karamaroudis, mavrakis, konstantinidis, zakynthinos, koutouleas, tonev players.


in 2001 department became professional under presidency , financial support of vlassis stathokostopoulos , later thanasis giannakopoulos.


in 2004 team won championship ex-player stelios kazazis coach. brazilian star-player dante amaral , marcelo elgarten, made strong team , finished again first in 2006, while reached again final of european cup in 2009.
