constructed in 1922 following 1918 carsley-gilbert campus master plan, women’s residence intended part of 2 u-shaped clusters of men’s , women’s dormitories. identical contemporary counterpart, elrod hall, , corbin hall 3 buildings of 2 “u”s erected before plan abandoned in 1930s. renowned helena architects j. g. link , c. s. haire designed handsome renaissance revival style facility striking red-brown brick façade , simple cream-colored terra cotta ornamentation. renamed brantly hall, building functioned women’s residence until 1987. had been renamed in honor of lois (reat) brantly, had been social director of hall on 16 years. mrs. brantly had been considered a, mother away home.

the construction of women’s residence hall, completed in 1927, marks end of era. last building erected in strict accordance carsley-gilbert campus master plan , placed within intended u-shaped dormitory arrangement. george carsley , missoula architect c. j. forbis collaborated on design of renaissance revival style building. carsley’s last contribution campus , 1 of last of prolific career. red-brown brick, cream-colored terra cotta, , green spanish roof tile mirror features of brantly hall, omission of horizontal line on third story visually diminishes differences in size.

fronting oval @ heart of campus, university’s oldest standing building, known main hall, proudly represents birth of noble institution. celebrated missoula architect a. j. gibson designed richardsonian romanesque style building that, along now-demolished companion science hall, comprised campus @ school’s opening in 1899. during university’s dedication ceremony in 1898, corn, oil, , water symbolizing plenty, joy, , peace poured on building’s cornerstone. today hourly chiming of bells in majestic bell tower serves constant reminder of enduring solidity of university.
