the graphic novel

after previous retcon roy thomas , tom mandrake in 1987 shazam! new beginning miniseries, captain marvel again given revised origin in 1994 graphic novel power of shazam!. captain marvel s origin retold in jeff smith s shazam!: monster society of evil limited series in 2007, though origin takes place outside of dc continuity.


as power of shazam! graphic novel opens, ten-year-old billy batson s parents, both archeologists, working in egypt, excavating tomb of ramses ii associate theo adam. murdering elder batsons, adam kidnaps young daughter mary , steals scarab necklace once attached 1 of sarcophagi in tomb. billy had been left behind @ home in fawcett city because of poor school grades. in fawcett comics origin story whiz comics #2 (1940), billy abandoned cruel uncle ebenezer, , becomes paperboy earn living. 1 night, billy meets dark-clothed stranger outside of subway tunnel, , follows stranger onto magic subway car. subway car leads billy realm of wizard shazam, assigns boy successor. speaking shazam s name, billy struck bolt of magic lightning , transformed captain marvel, adult superhero.

as captain marvel, billy thwarts plan theo adam , employer, rich tycoon mr. sivana, destroy whiz radio building , silence witness adam s murders. adam s encounters marvel, spitting image of c.c. batson , along clues expedition, lead him realize reincarnation of teth-adam, original heir power of shazam. upon crossing wizard, teth-adam killed , powers drawn scarab, same scarab adam stole tomb after killing batsons. taking scarab sivana s trophy room, adam says wizard s name , struck magic lightning, becoming black adam.


adam , captain marvel battle each other on grounds of sivana-funded fawcett world fair, marvel winning battle snatching adam s scarab him. marvel takes adam wizard, takes adam s voice , wipes memory. billy later learns stranger led billy wizard spirit of father, , sister mary still alive. billy promises, captain marvel, fight injustice , evil, , find missing sister. meanwhile, sivana has lost of money , possessions due destruction of properties marvel , adam, , swears revenge on captain.


the series

ordway s graphic novel success, winning comics buyer s guide fan award favorite original graphic album of 1994, , led publication of ongoing power of shazam! series, set 4 years after graphic novel. series, began publication in march 1995, reintroduced many of characters fawcett comics current dc continuity, including mary bromfield/mary marvel, freddy freeman/captain marvel, jr., beautia sivana, mister tawky tawny, bulletman, minute-man, spy smasher, ibis , taia, , hoppy marvel bunny. villains reincarnated in series included ibac, mister mind, mister atom, aunt minerva, , blaze , satanus superman titles, retconned wizard shazam s illegitimate children.


mary marvel introduced adult instead of in traditional teenage form, , insisted upon sharing name of captain marvel brother. captain marvel, jr., resenting being called junior of time , needing name without calling down magic lightning (his magic word being captain marvel ), renamed himself cm3 . jerry ordway wrote of stories series , 1 annual, , provided painted covers in style of graphic novel well. peter krause, mike manley, dick giordano, , ordway himself served series main artists.


while series received reviews , featured guest artwork comic book icons such curt swan , gil kane, sales golden-age inspired series slowed went on, darker, more intense comics had become more popular 1990s marvel family s more light-hearted adventures. book cancelled issue number 47 in march 1999 (issue #1,000,000 published in november 1998 part of dc 1 million event, giving series total of 48 issues published). 1 annual issue published in 1996.


blackest night

in january 2010, power of shazam! had single issue revival (issue #48), (continuing vol. 2 numbering) tying dc s blackest night event. involved black adam s dead protégé osiris being reanimated black lantern, , battling killer, apokoliptian crocodile man sobek. billy , mary batson, powerless after events of justice society of america (vol. 3) #25, appear briefly in issue.

the power of shazam! #33 (dec. 1997) among selected stories reprinted in 2008 trade paperback shazam! greatest stories ever told (isbn 1401216749), highlighting of best captain marvel tales published.
