the first wooden mausoleum in 1925


vladimir lenin died of stroke on january 21, 1924. while body lay in state in pillar hall of house of unions, politburo discussed ways preserve it, forty days, despite objections widow , siblings. joseph stalin gave instruction install vault lenin s embalmed remains inside kremlin wall, , on january 27 lenin s casket deposited in temporary wooden vault built in 1 day. first proper mausoleum built of wood in march–july 1924 , officially opened on august 1 (foreign visitors allowed inside on august 3). contest design , build new, permanent, mausoleum declared in april 1926; construction alexey shchusev s design began in july 1929 , complete in sixteen months. mausoleum has since functioned government reviewing stand during public parades. lenin s body remains in mausoleum date (january 2017), excluding period of evacuation tyumen in 1941–1945.
