ben tillman, senator since 1895, drew opposition in democratic primary first time during career. had long avoided opposition because of influence in democratic party in state, 1912 had moderated positions , lost radical edge had allowed him build hard core following of support. radicals in state electorate had thrown support coleman livingston blease in gubernatorial election of 1910 , bleasites determined knock chief opponent, tillman, out of office. w. jasper talbert emerged candidate of bleasites , nathaniel b. dial entered race alternative two. voters of state split support between tillmanite , bleasite factions both tillman , blease won respective primaries.
