the old mill survivor of 4 windmills once located along range of hills on west side of nantucket island. smock type windmill built in 1746 nathan wilbur, local sailor had spent time in holland. wilbur used oaken beams had washed ashore wrecked ships of mill s framework, held wooden pins , scrap metal.
in 1828, old mill sold jared gardner twenty dollars. in deplorable condition. however, instead of dismantling it, gardner, carpenter, restored mill working condition capable of grinding corn. mill sold once again in 1866 john francis sylvia, operated many years assistant peter hoy until fell disuse in 1892. in 1897 caroline french purchased mill @ auction $850 , donated nantucket historical association.
the old mill 50 feet high, 4 vanes 30 feet in length. interior mechanism has driving wheel @ top, connected blades. has fixed body containing machinery , cap turns face sails wind. projecting driving wheel wooden cogs intersect set of wooden teeth in vertical shaft, in turn revolves upper grindstone. crude brake consisting of heavy oak beam attached rope , pulley box of stone weighing several hundred pounds built counteract force of wind. box of stone can raised or lowered press beam against windmill shaft.
inside, seasonal visitors can watch gears corn ground meal, producing 5 bushels hour. documentation of restoration of windmill located @ nantucket historical association s research center.
