in year 44 bc. city receive title of colony under name colonia iulia urbs nova carthago (cvinc), founded citizens of roman law. augustine in 27bc. decided reorganize hispania , city included in new imperial province tarraconensis, through tiberius , claudius, made capital of conventus iuridicus carthaginensis.


during reign of augustus, city subjected ambitious development program included, among other urban developments, construction of impressive roman theater, augusteum (imperial cult building) , forum .


later, under emperor diocletian, made capital of roman province carthaginensis, separate tarraconensis
