on may 1, 1308, king albert of austria murdered nephew john parricida in community of windisch. in memory of event widow, elizabeth of carinthia, founded monastery 1310-11 @ site, approximately 200 meters (660 ft) brugg. monastic complex centered around contemplative life of nuns, while small community of friars tended both spiritual needs , of surrounding community.
albert , elisabeth’s oldest daughter, agnes of austria, widow of king andrew iii of hungary, moved königsfelden in 1317 , helped thrive, did not join monastery.
with conquest of western aargau city of bern, monastery lost connection habsburg family. abolished in course of success of reformation in switzerland in 1528. complex served seat of bernese bailiffs of königsfelden district, steward took on administration of former monastic property.
in 1804 former monastery became property of canton of aargau, had been founded in year before. new canton established mental hospital. in 1872 new building built , since 1887 has been psychiatric clinic. during construction large part of franciscan monastery demolished.
