the general created chuck dixon in 1992. ulysses hadrian armstrong psychotic child mind of military genius. bored life @ military school, reads books military history. ulysses later escapes school, burning down school , killing inside, acts of arson , mass murder, avoid alerting authorities escape. goes gotham city recruit small-time gang members makeshift army . utilizing military skills, armstrong s reputation gains him nickname general . continuing campaign become powerful crime boss of gotham, general conquers , absorbs enemy gangs sizable force. laying siege police station intent of capturing storage room full of guns , illegal drugs, fund future activities, confronted batman. once captured batman, general s undisciplined army scatters in fear, , general himself sent youth detention center.

after long absence, general has returned gotham city, having aged several years, grown several feet , has become more formidable hand-to-hand combatant. physically appears closer in age robin , spoiler. has reasons yet unknown been hired spoiler gather information gang wars, , find possible solution them. continues hold grudge against robin , betrays spoiler. spoiler survives gunshot shoulder, , distracts him long enough drop on him , escape.

he comes possession of red robin costume worn jason todd, , uses part of campaign of psychological warfare against tim drake. more formidable ever, s revealed holding lonnie machin hostage , have commandeered latter s identity anarky. machin s approach anarky had been cause social change, armstrong s approach bordered more on psychotic , meaningless acts of chaos , destruction.

armstrong manages catch robin in warehouse, yet robin escapes through unknown means, not without sustaining serious burns head. after, final confrontation ensues, anarky attempts kill of gotham city s gangs, create more violence. combined efforts of robin, spoiler, commissioner gordon, officer harper , gotham gangs results in armstrong s defeat. however, not without price. in order take edge off of armstrong, robin asked officer harper bring armstrong family confront ulysses. while action worked, armstrong caused bomb explode, killing brother , sister in blast. armstrong blames robin deaths.

rebirth

ulysses returns continuity after flashpoint during detective comics storyline rise of batmen , part of dc s rebirth relaunch. version of character teenage genius works military organization known colony, models after batman , methods. ulysses job within colony reverse engineer batman s equipment, observe bat-family. version of character shown cheerful yet sociopathic, gleefully offering show batman footage of more gruesome missions colony has undertaken.
