this season saw first official international match take place against england. whilst series of england v scotland matches organised c. w. alcock had taken in london on previous 2 years, these matches never considered representative, scottish sides being composed entirely of london residents. in 1872, queen s park, scotland s leading club, took upon organise has entered history books first official international, despite fact there yet no scottish football association sanction it. appropriately enough, match arranged st andrew s day, , west of scotland cricket club s ground @ hamilton crescent in partick selected venue. crowd of approximately 4,000 people attended on day, although time of match had been delayed fog.

the return fixture following march marked first official meeting of sides in england, , again took place @ cricket ground, oval, english adopting scotland s 2-2-6 formation. severely limited funds available fledgling sfa meant able finance rail fares london 8 players, team augmented 3 anglo-scots had appeared in earlier unofficial series, lord kinnaird, john blackburn , henry renny-tailyour. latter had honour of scoring scotland s first international goal, match ended in 4–2 defeat.
