Beginnings Tartu






archaeological evidence of first permanent settlement on site of modern tartu dates 5th century ad. 7th century, local inhabitants had built wooden fortification on east side of toome hill (toomemägi).


the first documented record of area made in 1030 chroniclers of kievan rus. yaroslav wise, prince of kiev, invaded region year, built own fort there, , named yuryev (literally yury s – yury (a russified form of george) being yaroslav s christian name). kievan rulers collected tribute surrounding ancient estonian county of ugaunia, possibly until 1061, when, according chronicles, yuryev burned down estonian tribe called sosols. kievan rus again controlled tartu 1133 unknown period, possibly 1176/1177. in 12th century tartu notable slavic settlement in chud territory.


estonian amateur historian enn haabsaar speculates yuryev mentioned in context bila tserkva, ukraine, town founded yaroslav wise yuriev same time, 1032. views have been criticized historian ain mäesalu.
