in 1953 egyptian leader president gamal abdel nasser told leader of muslim brotherhood wanted enforce wearing of hijab, nasser responded, sir, know have daughter in college - , doesn t wear headscarf or anything! why don t make wear headscarf? can t make 1 girl, own daughter, wear it, , yet want me go , make ten million women wear it?

in 2010, baher ibrahim of guardian criticized increasing trend pre-pubescent girls in egypt wear hijab.


many egyptians in elite opposed hijab, believing harms secularism. 2012 businesses had established bans on veils, , egyptian elites supported these bans.


in 2016 , 2017 government of egypt , parliament made moves ban burka leading politicians argued full-face veil neither islamic tradition, nor required in koran.
