1920s , ludwig binswanger

ludwig binswanger swiss psychiatrist , 1 of leading minds in field of existential psychology. in 1920s, binswanger worked medical director of sanatorium in kreuzlingen, switzerland. here, biswanger worked patients suffering schizophrenia, melancholy , mania. heavy influenced edmund husserl s, binswanger believed lifeworld key understanding patients subjective experience. binswanger, mental illness involved remaking of world in patients mind, including alterations in lived experience of time, space, body sense, , social relationships. binswanger called analytical concept, phenomenological anthropology. while influenced sigmund freud, binswanger disagreed freud , psychoanalysis mental illness caused strong attachment mother, rather, attachment can exist due alteration in patients life experience differs others. s important intention governing binswanger’s daseinsanalyse understand psychiatric symptoms expression of alteration of structural components of one’s basic being-in-the-world. this, had take ontologically determined existentials of heidegger , bring them frame of concrete human existence (that is, applying ontological prioris concrete individual) .

ludwig binswanger against idea of institutionalizing psychiatric daseinsanalysis , focused solely on research. however, medard boss, friend , colleague of both ludwig binswanger , martin heidegger wanted take daseinsanalysis beyond research , turn practical therapy. initially, boss strong believer in freudian psychoanalysis, after world war ii, boss felt meta-psychology of psychoanalysis fundamentally flawed , daseinsanalysis correct. however, in 1957, boss published paper directly criticized not freud , student jung, binswanger well. critique lead break in friendship between boss , binswanger.


boss, through studies heidegger, found modern medicine , psychology, including psychoanalysis , binswanger s form of daseinsanlysis made incorrect assumptions on means human. boss , heidegger, mental illness not caused alternation of patients lived experience, rather conflict between , meaning of life , purpose, or dasein. boss felt psychology had moved away religion , god. if patient understand , accept religion , god answer conflict, resolve conflict , illness vanish.


in 1970, boss , fellow psychiatrist, gion condrau founded swiss society daseinsanalysis , later zurich institute daseinsanalytic psychotherapy , psychosomatics, known medard boss foundation. in 1984 swiss professional federation daseinsanalysis founded in zurich.
