new england s defense retooled before 2003 season when team signed veteran safety rodney harrison free agent , traded defensive lineman ted washington. these additions, patriots led league in fewest passing yards allowed per attempt (5.64), fewest passing touchdowns allowed (11), , interceptions (29). ranked 4th in fewest rushing yards allowed (1,434) , 7th in fewest total yards (4,919).


washington helped anchor new england s defensive line, recording 32 tackles , 2 sacks. pro bowl defensive tackle richard seymour contributed 8 sacks. behind them, patriots had 3 outstanding linebackers: pro bowl linebacker willie mcginest (5.5 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries , 1 interception), mike vrabel (9.5 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, 4 forced fumbles, , 2 interceptions), , tedy bruschi (131 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, 3 interceptions, , 2 touchdowns).


harrison became veteran leader in secondary, recording 92 tackles, 3 interceptions, , 3 sacks. meanwhile, pro bowl cornerback ty law recorded 6 interceptions, cornerback (and ex-panthers player) tyrone poole had 6 interceptions 112 return yards , 1 touchdown, , rookie safety eugene wilson recorded 4 interceptions. overall, secondary combined 19 interceptions.
