after conclusion of world war ii , manhattan project, seaborg eager return academic life , university research free restrictions of wartime secrecy. in 1946, added responsibilities professor heading nuclear chemistry research @ lawrence radiation laboratory operated university of california on behalf of united states atomic energy commission. seaborg named 1 of ten outstanding young men in america u.s. junior chamber of commerce in 1947 (along richard nixon , others). seaborg elected national academy of sciences in 1948. 1954 1961 served associate director of radiation laboratory. appointed president truman serve member of general advisory committee of atomic energy commission, assignment retained until 1960.


seaborg served chancellor @ university of california, berkeley, 1958 1961. term coincided relaxation of mccarthy-era restrictions on students freedom of expression had begun under predecessor, clark kerr. in october 1958, seaborg announced university had relaxed prior prohibitions on political activity on trial basis, , ban on communists speaking on campus lifted. paved way free speech movement of 1964-65.
