lori s husband rick wounded in line of duty , left in coma during outbreak. lori, believing him dead, takes carl , accompanies rick s best friend shane head atlanta. befriend carol , family while on road, , later both groups settle other survivors on outskirts of atlanta near abandoned quarry. lori, convinced of rick s death witnessing military bomb atlanta, succumbs distraught state , embarks on sexual relationship shane.
