early gold coinage queen victoria s crowned bust consisted of 1 mohur coins dated 1862. these coins of same weight (11.66 grams = 1 tola) , fineness (0.9167) eic issued mohurs. these coins, minted between 1866 , 1869, trade coinage , not recognized legal tender. number of varieties (including proofs) known minor variations in reverse , obverse decoration details. victoria queen mohurs struck year 1875, 1870 proof issues mature bust of victoria.


in 1876, victoria assumed title of empress of india and, 1877, legend on obverse of coins changed victoria empress . gold mohurs new obverse legend issued between 1877 , 1891. mintage of these mohurs given date relatively low, making them considerably scarce. fractional values of mohur (nominally valued @ fifteen silver rupees) struck in denominations of ten , 5 rupees between 1870 , 1879. except small number of ten , 5 rupees dated 1870, of fractional mohurs proof issues. varieties both younger , mature busts exist.

currency , proof issues of 1862 dated rupee coins have number of different obverse , reverse die varieties, helpful in identification of mint. design of coin, however, remained largely unchanged. 1863 till 1875, bombay mint introduced unusual system of dots date coins. these dots occur on reverse below date, above word 1 , or in both positions. 1874, practice halted , coins began dated continuously. development, may inferred time batta system must have disappeared. other victoria coinage, title on obverse changed victoria queen victoria empress in 1877. calcutta mint coins carry no mint mark or incused c @ bottom of reverse. bombay mint issues marked raised bead below date, or raised/incused b in top or bottom flower, exceptions. rupee coins victoria s bust minted until death in 1901.


fractional denominations of half rupee, quarter rupee, , 2 annas issued under victoria s reign. dot-dating system not used these denominations, , unique 1862 dated bombay rupees. similar rupee coins, title of queen changed empress in 1877. bombay , calcutta issues have mint identification marks similar rupee issues (no mark or c incused calcutta, bead or raised/incused b bombay). different reverse , obverse die varieties known each denomination.
