history

activated in mid-1942 b-25 mitchell medium bomber squadron, trained third air force in southeastern united states. deployed england in september 1942 , flew missions under viii bomber command on german-occupied france attacking enemy troop formations, bridges , airfields. part of operation torch invasion of north africa in november 1942, being deployed new mediterranean theater of operations (mto), being assigned twelfth air force in french morocco in november. in north africa, squadron engaged in support , interdictory operations, bombing marshalling yards, rail lines, highways, bridges, viaducts, troop concentrations, gun emplacements, shipping, harbors, , other objectives in north africa.


the squadron engaged in psychological warfare missions, dropping propaganda leaflets behind enemy lines. took part in allied operations against axis forces in north africa during march–may 1943, reduction of pantelleria , lampedusain islands during june, invasion of sicily in july, landing @ salerno in september, allied advance toward rome during january–june 1944, invasion of southern france in august 1944, , allied operations in northern italy september 1944 april 1945. inactivated in italy after german capitulation in september 1945.


reactivated part of air force reserve in 1947, unclear whether or not squadron manned or equipped. inactivated in 1949.


reactivated in 1952 strategic air command squadron, receiving b-29 superfortress bombardment training 90th bombardment wing, april–august 1952. acted training squadron until 1954 when replaced propeller-driven b-29s new b-47e stratojet swept-wing medium bombers, capable of flying @ high subsonic speeds , designed penetrating airspace of soviet union. in 1960s, b-47 considered reaching obsolescence, , being phased out of sac s strategic arsenal. b-47s began being sent amarc @ davis-monthan in 1965; inactivated in march.
