coaching career
footscray: 1984–1989

he footscray s senior coach 1984 1989. during time @ bulldogs known tough stance on many players, including doug hawkins. teams final standings in years in charge 7th (1984), 3rd (1985), 8th (1986), 7th (1987), 8th (1988) , 13th (1989). impressed dedication , professionalism. malthouse left financially stricken club @ end of 1989, weeks before announced intentions merge fitzroy; merger never went ahead due supporter fightback, , malthouse criticized assistant coach terry wheeler not sticking club during time of need.


west coast eagles: 1990–1999

for ten years 1990 senior coach west coast eagles. during tenure coach eagles made finals every year, including 1992 , 1994 premierships , 1991 grand finalists. final minor premiership ladder positions 3rd, 1st, 4th, 6th, 1st, 5th, 4th, 5th, 7th , 5th (1990–1999).


collingwood: 2000–2011

recruited magpies in 2000 collingwood president eddie mcguire, malthouse has coached collingwood finals in 8 out of twelve seasons coach including grand final appearances in 2002, 2003, 2010 (twice) , 2011. in 2010, after first drawn afl/vfl grand final since 1977, collingwood claimed premiership success resounding 56-point win on st kilda in replay. club s biggest ever win in grand final , first since 1990. in july 2009, mcguire produced succession plan in malthouse hand on coaching reins club legend nathan buckley @ end of 2011 season. in 2011, malthouse guided collingwood grand final against geelong cats. after dramatic 3 point win on hawthorn in preliminary final, shown on tv in tears in coach s box after side came 17 points down @ final change book place in malthouse s fifth grand final collingwood coach , eighth overall. collingwood lost 2011 afl grand final geelong 38 points. game final 1 collingwood coach. malthouse advised not taking on position director of coaching @ collingwood after loss , had made decision 6 weeks earlier. in addition, while coaching collingwood, malthouse spent time guest media commentator sen 1116.


carlton: 2013–2015

malthouse announced senior coach of carlton on 11 september 2012 next 3 seasons. in 2013 blues finished ninth on ladder, raised eighth place after essendon penalised well-documented supplements scandal, following one-point win on port adelaide in final round, kept north melbourne overtaking them on percentage. carlton subsequently defeated richmond in elimination final, making malthouse successful finals coach ever.


carlton struggled remainder of tenure @ club. 2014 campaign began 4 consecutive losses en route 13th-place finish; , in 2015, club sat last record of 1–7 after 8 weeks. club s on-field performances deteriorated, there intense media speculation malthouse s position, , public relationship between malthouse , club administration – notably president mark logiudice , ceo steven trigg, had both been in roles since mid-2014 – deteriorated. on 26 may 2015, hours after giving radio interview on melbourne station sen highly critical of club s administrators, malthouse sacked.
