georges goursat born , raised in upper-middle-class family périgueux. wealth inherited father @ age of 21 allowed him sustain gilded youth.

in 1888 self published in périgueux first 3 albums of caricatures, signing sem (figure, left), allegedly tribute amédée de noé signed caricatures le monde illustré cham .

from 1890 1898, settled few years in bordeaux. during period, published more albums , first press caricatures in la petite gironde (fr) , discovered work of leonetto cappiello. style matured, becoming both simpler , more precise.

during same period, made trips paris. in 1891, designed 2 posters printed in workshop of jules chéret (figure, right) singer paulus (fr). published first caricatures of artists in l illustration (albert brasseur (fr)) , le rire (paulus, polin , yvette guilbert).

from 1898 1900, lived in marseille. during stay, met jean lorrain convinced him live in paris.

belle Époque (1900–1914)

goursat arrived in paris in march 1900, @ time of opening of universal exposition.

he picked horse races way of entry in high society. in june, 3 months after arrival, self-published new album, le turf, caricatures of many prominent parisian socialites (marquess boni de castellane, prince trubetskoy, count clermont-tonnerre, baron alphonse , gustave de rothschild, polaire). success of album made him famous overnight. in october of same year, published album, paris-trouville, same success. 9 others followed until 1913.

in 1904, goursat received légion d honneur. in 1909, exhibited painter auguste roubille, first in paris, in monte carlo , london. diorama, composed of hundreds of wooden figurines of merely paris celebrities .

world war (1914–1918)

aged on 50 @ start of world war i, goursat not drafted. nevertheless involved himself war correspondent le journal. of rather chauvinistic articles had enormous impact . ten published in 1917 in un pékin sur le front. 2 others incorporated in 1923 in book, la ronde de nuit. in 1916 , 1918 goursat published 2 albums of croquis de guerre (war sketches). style different previous work. designed posters war bonds.

années folles (1918–1934)

after war, goursat came kind of caricatures made him famous. in 1919, published le grand monde à l envers (high society upside down). around 1923, published 3 almums under general title of le nouveau monde (the new world). in 1923, made officer of légion d honneur. in 1929, severely impoverished economic crisis. after heart attack in 1933, died in 1934.
