john pettie born in edinburgh, son of alexander , alison pettie. in 1852 family moved east linton, haddingtonshire. initially, father objected pettie taking art career, overcome following portrait lad of village carrier , donkey.


when sixteen entered trustees academy in edinburgh, working under robert scott lauder william quiller orchardson, j. macwhirter, william mctaggart, peter graham (1836–1921), tom graham (1840–1906) , george paul chalmers. first exhibits @ royal scottish academy scene fortunes of nigel, 1 of many subjects sought inspiration in novels of sir walter scott, , 2 portraits in 1858, followed in 1859 prison. royal academy in 1860 sent armourers; , success of work , d ye lack, madam? in following year encouraged him settle in london (1862), joined orchardson.


in 1866 elected associate of royal academy, , in 1874 received full academical honours in succession sir edwin landseer. diploma picture jacobites, 1745. pettie hard , rapid worker, and, in best days, colourist of high order , brilliant executant. in days produced amount of book illustration. connection words began in 1861, , continued until 1864. painted portrait of painter james campbell noble rsa , exhibited in scottish national portrait gallery in edinburgh. in 1894 selection of work included in winter exhibition of royal academy. self-portrait in tate gallery.
