selective visibility: ability see occurring on stage. lighting design ineffective if viewers cannot see characters, unless explicit intent.
revelation of form: altering perception of shapes onstage, particularly three-dimensional stage elements.
focus: directing audience s attention area of stage or distracting them another.
mood: setting tone of scene. harsh red light has different effect soft lavender light.
location , time of day: establishing or altering position in time , space. blues can suggest night time while orange , red can suggest sunrise or sunset. use of mechanical filters ( gobos ) project sky scenes, moon, etc.
projection/stage elements: lighting may used project scenery or act scenery onstage.
plot (script): lighting event may trigger or advance action onstage , off.
