a stream flows through hartfield, entering medway left bank downstream of b2026 bridge. powered 4 watermills.


bower forge

tq 441 384 51°07′36″n 0°03′37″e / 51.126641°n 0.060212°e / 51.126641; 0.060212 forge may have been in existence in 1558, when hugh bottinge left 2 tons of yron in will. working in 1653 ruined 1664. dam has been recorded 200 metres (220 yd) long. mansion of hammerwood takes name forge.

tq 453 383 51°07′32″n 0°04′38″e / 51.125439°n 0.077310°e / 51.125439; 0.077310 furnace , forge mentioned in 1563. in operation 1574 1700. michael weston ironmaster in 1574 , in 1578 passed william bowyer. richard stretfield ironmaster here in late 16th century, later running pilbeames forge. sackville turner acquired furnace in 1613, , sold courthopes in 1617. in 1639 acquired richard tichborne , john maynard. although working in 1653, ruined 1664 appears have been put work, being mentioned in 1700.

a domesday site. mill mentioned here in 1598. surviving mill building dates 1740. mill corn mill overshot waterwheel of 11 feet (3.35 m) diameter , 5 feet 6 inches (1.68 m) wide. atherfold family millers 1602 mid-1880s, although john burfoot recorded here in 1867. alfred tester miller in 1899, followed barker family ran mill until 1948. waterwheel dismantled in 1977 following storm damage, internal machinery survives. mill small hotel, , featured in 1995 film carrington starring emma thompson , jonathan pryce.
