gourmet founded earle macausland went on serve publisher , editor in chief forty years. first issue january 1941, , main competitor @ time american cookery, formerly boston cooking school magazine had been published since 1896. of content similar – articles on food, recipes magazine, recipes submitted readers, recipes requested readers , advice sought readers. american cookery in black-and-white, printed on newsprint, smaller pages , content focused on america. gourmet upscale, slick, in color, focus on europe , new york city, , of recipes carrying french names. gourmet began publication before america entered world war ii, brought war rationing. upscale audience urged save issues , use recipes after war , rationing ended.


subsequent years

condé nast bought magazine in 1983.


on october 5, 2009 condé nast publications ceo chuck townsend announced magazine cease monthly publication; company remain committed brand, retaining gourmet’s book publishing , television programming, , gourmet recipes on epicurious. concentrate our publishing activities in epicurean category on bon appétit.
