property

the estate bounded on east annandale road, on north saw kill , west river. tree-lined driveway road leads west visitor center , parking lot next orchard. there short walk through grove of trees open lawn in front of main house, atop bluff overlooking river , catskill escarpment across in distance.


five of 22 buildings, structures , sites identified on estate have been listed contributing resources historic character. these main house, 3 other davis-designed buildings , surviving landscaping.


main house

the house two-and-half-story five-by-four-bay building sided in stucco on rubble stone, 2 frame wings on north , south. latter sanded give stonier appearance. veranda on west (rear) elevation. metallic hipped roof pierced 2 pairs of brick chimneys on sides.


all facades heavily decorated. swags on 4 chimneys, , balustrades rim of roof lines. central pier on east above main entrance topped urn, flanked wreathed balustrades, cornice , frieze triglyphs , metope-ornamented medallions. double-doored main entrance flanked pilasters , topped fanlight , ornate keystone. sheltered semicircular portico supported fluted corinthian columns.


a similar portico adorns rear, balustrade topped urns. on wings flat pilasters support frieze, columns on semi octagonal south wing creating arcade.


the main entrance leads rectangular hall doors leading 2 parlors on either side. partly divided segmental arch supported 2 tapered wooden columns. library north, stair hallway on south. of decorative woodwork original.



the coach house


outbuildings

five outbuildings, of them built around garden, in nearest cluster, south , southwest of main house. these include shingle-sided lodge , board-and-batten shed, clapboard-sided court, wrought iron greenhouse, , coach house. last building outbuilding visible main house. flushboard-sided one-and-a-half-story frame house cross-gabled roof topped polygonal cupola. pilasters mark corners flanks of main building. interior contains of original woodwork.


to east, close road, barn complex. consists of 1861 barn along frame structures farm office , storage sheds, along octagonal stone reservoir building. board-and-batten farmhouse features cross-gabled roof , triple palladian-style window on rear.


a group of cottages located downhill farmhouse. simple frame structures, one, swiss cottage, designed davis. features low-sloping truncated-gabled roof vergeboard on roofline , balconies on rear. thompson house has dentilled , bracketed cornice.


there other isolated outbuildings elsewhere, modern, such visitors center. cement power station @ creek mouth, dams. small 20th century cottages scattered in orchards. buildings described past visitors estate, such conservatory, no longer extant.


landscapes

the north , south sections of property, known north , south woods, remain heavily wooded. south woods, approximately 70 acres (28 ha) in size, oldest oak forest in hudson valley. north woods slopes down ravine saw kill flows through. winding paths , trails lead through both wooded tracts. in north woods lead waterfall; in south woods river s edge.


on east property s orchards, leased , operated montgomery place orchards. on farm, on 60 different varieties of apple , pear trees planted , harvested berries, vegetables, grapes , peaches. annandale atomic hard cider produced on farm american , english varietal apples. produce sold @ montgomery place orchards market. black locust trees line 0.5-mile (0.80 km) unpaved allĂ©e , surround lawn of main house. lawn on west of house slopes down reflecting pond @ edge of wooded shore.
