rowing @ georgetown has distinguished history dating founding of boat club in 1876. team suspended 1909 1920 due lack of interest, , involvement in world war i. georgetown added men s lightweight team in 1963, women s team in 1975, , women s lightweight team in 1996.
the men have won 5 national championships @ intercollegiate rowing association regatta, recent being men s varsity lightweight fours coxswain on june 5, 2016. first national championship win in 1991 varsity heavyweight fours coxswain.
the rowing blade features blue , gray, team s colors since 1876.
under guidance of coaches luke agnini , steve full, georgetown competes member of top leagues in american rowing, eastern association of rowing colleges , eastern association of women s rowing colleges. georgetown s 4 crew teams have seen success in recent years, including trips henley royal regatta , entry eastern sprints men s heavyweight , lightweight teams , second-in-the-nation finishes both men s , women s lightweight teams. many georgetown oarsmen , -women have gone on represent united states on national , olympic teams. lightweight women s team has earned bronze medals @ women s eastern sprints in lightweight women s varsity 8+ in 2013 , lightweight women s varsity 4+ in 2015. lw8+ crew earning bronze in 2013 later named row2k crew of week.
the university rents space in thompson boat center, though has ongoing plans build new boathouse closer campus. land workouts, georgetown rowers have access rowing training center, refurbished storeroom beneath leavey center repurposed erg room in 2013 (its underground, windowless location has inspired numerous nicknames such thunder dungeon ). notable georgetown crew alumni include walk-on mike vespoli, founder , chief executive officer of vespoli usa, inc. actor bradley cooper.

the sailing team competes in middle atlantic intercollegiate sailing association (maisa) of inter-collegiate sailing association (icsa). under coach mike callahan has been ranked number 1 nationally in icsa sailing world college rankings on multiple occasions. team sails washington sailing marina andrew campbell named u.s. olympic committee (usoc) male sailing athlete of year in 2002 , 2005, , icsa college sailor of year in 2006. 1 of 6 team members awarded college sailors of year on 7 occasions, nevin snow has taken prize twice, in 2015 , 2016. campbell helped lead team first of 14 inter-collegiate sailing association national championships since 2001, , reigning national co-ed champions of 2016. during time team won 7 maisa conference championships, known america trophy. after team s 2013 national championship, invited participate in 2014 world university match racing championships in trentino, italy, on lago di ledro, won 7–1, besting nineteen teams fourteen countries. hoyas won leonard m. fowle trophy best overall collegiate team in 2006.

the men s soccer team organized in 1952, , have made 4 ncaa tournament appearances, in 1994, 1997, 2010, , 2012. play in big east conference, , have made big east tournament 19 times, , advanced finals in 2012. coached brian wiese, , play home games on campus @ north kehoe field. women s soccer team began play in 1991, have been coached dave nolan since 1999, , share same home field. women s team has been ncaa tournament twice, in 2007 , 2010, when advanced quarterfinals.
six players men s soccer team have played professionally major league soccer: phil wellington (drafted in 1996), brandon leib (1997), eric kvello (1999), dan gargan 2004 (selected 43rd overall in 2005 mls supplemental draft), jeff curtin 2005 (1st round draft pick #14 overall), , steve neumann 2014 (1st round draft pick in 2014 mls superdraft, 4th overall pick). ricky schramm, played on 2006 hoyas, drafted in 3rd round d.c. united.
women s team star ingrid wells has played on united states u-23 women s national soccer team , göteborg fc.
daphne corboz left in july 2015 after four-year career georgetown university women s soccer team, whom three-time all-america selection national soccer coaches association of america, including first-team honors in 2012 after sophomore season. finished college career 47 goals, school record. before georgetown, attended watchung hills regional high school in new jersey , played club soccer pda tsunami.
lacrosse
both men s , women s lacrosse teams have been highly competitive in recent years, both in conference , tournament play. men s lacrosse team first organized in 1951, , entered division 1 play in 1970. team played in eastern college athletic conference until 2010 season, when big east conference created men s league. men s team made ncaa tournament each season 1996–2007, reaching final 4 in 1999.
the women s lacrosse team formed in 1977, , won first 6 consecutive big east titles 2001–2006. lady hoyas reached ncaa women s lacrosse championship final in both 2001 , 2002. in 2005, first season under new coach ricky fried, team went 13–5 , made ncaa tournament 8th straight year. both men s , women s teams play home games on multi-sport field.
football
georgetown football plays home games on cooper field on main campus.
the football team @ georgetown first formed on november 1, 1874, earliest recorded games dating 1887. 1940s, georgetown had 1 of better college football teams in america, , played in 1941 orange bowl, lost 14–7 mississippi state. college game became more expensive after world war ii, however, georgetown s program began lose money rapidly. hoyas last successful season 1949, when lost in sun bowl against texas western. program losing money, , on march 22, 1951, university s president canceled football program.
in 1964, georgetown allowed students start football program exhibition-only club sport. varsity football resumed in 1970 @ later became known division iii level. today, georgetown plays @ division football championship subdivision, competing in patriot league , perennially plays against ivy league schools. hoyas have begun cross-town rivalry howard university championship known d.c. cup.
big jim ricca, nfl defensive end , offensive lineman, graduated in 1949 , last hoya play in nfl game. in 2007, washington redskins made alex buzbee reserve player, becoming first georgetown player on nfl team since ricca retired in 1956. 2011 georgetown football team finished 8-3, first winning season since 1999 campaign, giving them second place in conference.

georgetown has been nationally successful in both cross country , track , field. men , women s track , field teams practice off-campus @ duke ellington track in neighboring burleith. men s , women s teams have both been ranked #1 u.s. track & field , cross country coaches association in recent years, both nationally , in mid-atlantic region. in 2011, women s cross country program won georgetown s other team ncaa championship besting big east rival villanova. chris miltenberg, women s cross country coach, won 2011 ncaa coach of year women s cross country. patrick henner director of men s , women s track , field of 2012. georgetown track , field has won 21 individual ncaa national championships, being 15 male athletes , 6 female athletes. first individual ncaa national champion charles capozzoli in cross country in 1952. date, there have been 11 national champions in indoor , 9 national champions in outdoor ncaa track , field championships.
baseball
baseball georgetown s oldest sport, first recorded game taking place in 1866, , team formally organized , sanctioned in 1870. hoyas have seen little national success, no appearances in ncaa division baseball championship since event established in 1947. team once known stonewalls, , 1 possible source of hoya saxa cheer famous among georgetown sports teams. hoyas play home games @ shirley povich field, 1,500 seat stadium located in bethesda, maryland , named washington post sports columnist shirley povich. stadium built in 2000. hoyas utilize 3 lighted batting cages , 2 bullpen areas located on campus above yates field house, , adjacent kehoe field.

the men s golf team has won 3 big east conference championships: 1998, 2010, , 2016. coached tommy hunter, named big east coach of year in 2010. have crowned 2 national champions: maurice mccarthy jr. in 1928 , john burke in 1938.
