porter became interested in arctic when attended robert peary s lectures on greenland in 1892. signed sail on ship miranda surveyor , artist frederick cook s voyage greenland next year. voyage ended ship colliding iceberg , crew being rescued inuit. porter continued travel arctic peary , greenland again in 1896, baffin island in 1897, yukon gold rush in 1898, labrador in 1899, , northern greenland in 1900. porter in charge of astronomical observations on ziegler polar expeditions financed new york businessman william ziegler in 1901 , 1903. second expedition stranded in arctic 3 years when ship, steam yacht america, crushed ice , sank in teplitz bay off rudolf island in russian arctic. in 1906 porter again joined frederick cook in expedition alaska’s mount mckinley. porter’s party surveyed 3,000-square-mile (7,800 km) region around mountain (including painting watercolor of mountain) while cook’s party broke off climb mountain. when parties rendezvoused, porter skeptical of cook s claims climbed mountain.
