pa 42 begins @ intersection pa 61 in near ghost town of centralia in columbia county, has been largely abandoned because of mine fire. pa 61, route heads north on two-lane undivided locust avenue. road passes through abandoned areas of town have been overgrown trees. route turns east , crosses conyngham township, becoming south main street , heading forested areas. pa 42 becomes four-lane road , heads northwest, passing through residential community of aristes, narrows 2 lanes. road curves northeast , becomes numidia drive, heading weiser state forest , turning northwest crosses big mountain. route turns west , northwest through more dense forests, passing east of shamokin reservoir. continuing west-northwest, pa 42 enters locust township crosses little mountain, leaving state forest , turning north. road heads open agricultural areas woods , residences. route briefly turns northwest before heading north again , passing through community of numidia. pa 42 curves northwest heads through more rural areas, crossing roaring creek , continuing catawissa township. road runs through mix of farmland , woodland homes, gaining second northbound lane. route becomes four-lane road in wooded area before turning three-lane road 1 northbound lane , 2 southbound lanes. pa 42 comes intersection pa 487, @ point route joins pa 42 concurrency, 2 routes heading north through more woodland two-lane road. road crosses catawissa creek catawissa , becomes mill street, heading northwest residential areas. pa 42 splits pa 487 heading west-northwest on main street, heading through commercial downtown of catawissa. road crosses norfolk southern s sunbury line before heading across susquehanna river, @ point road becomes rupert drive , heads montour township. here, route turns north , crosses north shore railroad. pa 42 runs through wooded areas west of railroad tracks susquehanna river short distance east. road turns north-northwest away railroad tracks , heads through residential community of rupert. route passes through more woodland homes before reaching interchange 11.

at point, pa 42 heads northeast concurrent 11 on four-lane divided montour boulevard, crossing fishing creek bloomsburg. after, route splits 11 @ interchange, heading northwest on four-lane divided mall boulevard , crossing fishing creek montour township. road heads near residential areas , narrows two-lane undivided road, crossing stream hemlock township. pa 42 heads through wooded areas nearby commercial development, turning north , passing near farmland, widening four-lane divided highway. road enters commercial areas , comes interchange i-80, intersecting southern terminus of pa 44 @ north end of interchange. route passes more businesses, heading west of columbia mall. pa 42 narrows two-lane undivided road , heads northeast through agricultural areas. route turns north onto millville road , runs through wooded areas west of little fishing creek. road curves north-northwest , heads through more woodland farm fields , homes, continuing west of creek. pa 42 heads north , continues through more rural areas, crossing madison township , turning west, becoming unnamed road. road turns north , heads through farmland homes, crossing little fishing creek mount pleasant township. route curves northwest , runs through more wooded areas farms , residences northeast of creek, entering greenwood township , turning north, passing through residential community of eyers grove. pa 42 continues through agricultural areas woods , homes, turning north-northwest , crossing millville. road passes through more rural areas before becoming south state street , running past homes. in center of town, route intersects pa 254 , becomes north state street, heading through more residential areas. pa 42 passes few businesses before turning north , heading greenwood township. here, road again runs along east bank of little fishing creek becomes unnamed , heads through rural areas of residential , commercial development, passing through iola. route heads north-northeast mix of farmland , woodland homes , intersects eastern terminus of pa 442. pa 42 crosses creek pine township , heads north through sereno, running through more farms , woods occasional residences before heading more forested areas. farther north, road passes through mix of farmland , woodland few homes.
