barrels have convex shape , bulge @ center, called bilge. facilitates rolling well-built wooden barrel on side , change directions little friction, compared cylinder. helps distribute stress evenly in material making container more curved. barrels have reinforced edges enable safe displacement rolling them @ angle (in addition rolling on sides described).

the wooden parts make barrel called staves, while rings hold them called hoops. latter made of galvanized iron, though historically made of flexible bits of wood called withies. while wooden hoops require barrels hooped , hoops stacked tightly along entire top , bottom third of barrel, iron-hooped barrels require few hoops on each end.
wine barrels typically come in 2 hoop configurations. american barrel features 6 hoops, top center: head- or chime hoop, quarter hoop , bilge hoop (times two), while french barrel features 8, including so-called french hoop, located between quarter- , bilge hoops (see wine barrel parts illustration). opening @ center of barrel called bung hole , stopper used seal bung. latter made of white silicone.
