in 2010–11 regular season, howard posted career-highs in points , shooting percentages, magic unable win division fourth straight year. although miami heat won division, magic won 52 games, , finished fourth seed in eastern conference playoffs. however, magic lost atlanta hawks in first-round of playoffs. howard led nba in technical fouls 18 in regular season, , received one-game suspensions after 16th , 18th technicals.


due lockout, 2011–12 regular season shortened 66 games. not long after lockout ended, howard, eligible become free agent @ end of season, demanded trade new jersey nets, los angeles lakers or dallas mavericks. howard stated although preference remain in orlando, did not feel magic organization doing enough build championship contender. later meet magic officials , agree off trade demands, stated felt team needed make changes roster if wanted contend championship.


on january 12, 2012, howard attempted nba regular season record 39 free throws against golden state warriors. howard entered game making 42 percent of free throws season , below 60 percent career. warriors hacked howard intentionally throughout game, , broke wilt chamberlain s regular season record of 34 set in 1962. (shaquille o neal attempted 39 free throws in game 2 of 2000 nba finals.) howard made 21 of 39 attempts, , finished 45 points , 23 rebounds in magic s 117–109 victory. on january 24, 2012, howard became magic s all-time scoring leader, surpassing nick anderson s 10,650 points.


on march 15, 2012, on day of trading deadline 2011–12 nba season, howard signed amendment contract, waiving right opt out @ end of season , committing stay magic through 2012–13 season. had asked traded new jersey nets, , magic prepared trade him had howard not signed amendment, avoid losing him free agent. on april 5, van gundy said informed management howard wanted him fired. during interview, center walked , hugged coach, unaware van gundy had confirmed report howard denied.


on april 19, 2012, howard s agent said howard undergo surgery repair herniated disk in back, , miss rest of 2011–12 season, 2012 summer olympics in london. during offseason, howard again requested magic trade him nets, had relocated brooklyn. intended become free agent @ end of 2012–13 season if not traded brooklyn.
