in july 1914, radical anarchists frequented ferrer center, , loosely associated adult education program, plotted bomb mansion of standard oil chairman rockefeller. on failing enter rockefeller estate in tarrytown. group took bomb lexington avenue apartment of louise berger (a school habitué , editor of mother earth bulletin), exploded, killing 4 people, including 3 of bombers, , wounding many others. ferrer center became politically notorious , shortly compelled leave new york city comparative isolation of stelton, new jersey. abbott among addressed mass meeting attended 5,000 in remembrance of killed in explosion.
