pendleton’s famous work school textbook, entitled narrative of negro (1971), used textbook in washington, dc public schools. textbook under chronological order starts african american history in ancient africa 1900. textbook s first 7 chapters towards study of african diaspora, focusing on africa, caribbean, , south america. next fifteen chapters focused on african american history, , followed colonial history , section dedicated events shaping twentieth century. pendleton emphasized many white allies had assisted african americans through oppressive moments in history. wrote positively of quakers, william lloyd garrison, george peabody, balanced narratives concerning white oppression white advocacy.
