the average elevation of plateau 400 m. surface gradually slopes down in north-south , west-east directions. surface undulates gently amplitude of 10-30 m each wave. lowlands covered combined paleozoic , mesozoic sediments average 4-5 km in thickness on whole surface.
starting valley of euphrates, terrain rises forming manbij plain , sinks again @ dhahab river valley in east of aleppo governorate. dhahab drains highlands north of bāb , runs in north-south direction 50 km until drains lake jabboul. west of dhahab valley terrain rises again forming mount ʻaqīl (mount taymar) (534 m) west of bāb , mount Ḥaṣṣ (550 m) west of lake jabboul. terrain sinks again forming valley of river quwēq. endpoint of quwēq, maṭkh swamp (249 m), lowest point in aleppo governorate. west of quwēq mount simeon. south of mount simeon plains of idlib. river ʻifrīn runs west of mount simeon. west of river ʻifrīn land rises again forming mount kurd. river ʻifrīn runs north south between mount simeon , mount kurd , turns west orontes valley, separating mount kurd mount Ḥārim south. mount Ḥārim separated mount zāwiya south rouj plain, leads ghab plain in orontes valley. highlands of western aleppo plateau collectively known limestone massif.
the southeastern portion of plateau arid steppe forms northern tip of syrian desert. rest of plateau fertile, northwest. plateau deforested except dispersed forest of 50 km² on eastern slope of mount kurd faces plain of aʻzāz. main trees in region aleppo pine , oak.
