marc blitzstein began war member of u.s. eighth army air force s film division in london, england, working composer, scriptwriter, , translator. chosen score film on history of aviation through promotion corporal in january 1943. blitzstein began work on orchestral poem freedom morning summer eventual performance in royal albert hall.
work on airborne score continued 1944, blitzstein providing other services u.s. army. mid-1944, had been promoted sergeant , became music director of american broadcasting service. original film project did not come fruition , blitzstein, composed score large orchestra , male chorus, did not have needed manpower wartime concert.
blitzstein returned united states in may 1945. score of airborne had been lost en route england, able play sections of work on piano conductor leonard bernstein. bernstein enthusiastically arranged premiere april 1946 , blitzstein rewrote score memory. original score recovered, blitzstein preferred newer version.
