philippe braunschweig , maurice béjart in 1988


the prix de lausanne founded in 1973 swiss industrialist philippe braunschweig , wife elvire. philippe, although not dancer, became interested in dance young man. russian dancer wife developed interest further.


the braunschweigs created competition after noticing lack of financial support young dance students, particularly small regional schools, wishing attend professional level programs.


he started approaching rosella hightower , maurice béjart drew rules competition.


what started small event has grown internationally acclaimed institution draws candidates on world. on past few years competition has seen big boom in asian candidates. because of great demand japanese students study abroad, office set in japan.


the braunschweigs announced resignation @ end of prix in 1996. in march 1997, competition came 25th anniversary, philanthropists handed on prix s direction executive committee composed of swiss secretary of state, franz blankart , artistic committee headed jan nuyts, worked prix many years. mr charles gebhard in charge of finances , ms patricia leroy heads actual organization. braunschweigs remain available consultants , have managed maintain original mission of competition.
