adjudication process

at beginning of adjudication process supervisory committee setup, consists of 2 members each of 5 “super genre” categories, global charts, urban, traditional, technical , jazz or classical. committee oversees entire sama ceremony production process, along steering, general rules, , vetting committees. these committees composed of unpaid volunteers record companies , industry stakeholders. judges drawn wide spectrum include journalists, critics, musicians, producers, , academics. there 5 judges per genre category, based on judge’s field of expertise. judge’s anonymity protected steering committee, ensure judge’s not influence each other. entire adjudication process takes place between september , february, nominees announced in march.


phase one

the first phase takes place between late-september , december. steering committee first determine award categories, rules, , judging criteria entries. panel of judges elected , call entries takes place in november. entries vetted comply committee rules, , genre guidelines.


phase two

in genre category phase, judges receive copy of entries (either album , dvd) end of december. entries scored against criteria set steering committee. score cards submitted online, along recommendations top 5 category nominees. top 5 categories nominated same pool of entries. electronic judging system calculates results, audited independent firm @ end of january.


phase three

this final phase of adjudication evaluates top 5 categories. 1 judge each genre category selected part of first round of voting. these judges select top 3 entries, in respective genres, taking account recommendations other judges. independent auditing firm ensures finalist in top 5 has qualified nomination in respective genre. once auditors have confirmed top 5 finalist list, last round of voting begins. judges participate in round determine winners of each top 5 categories.
