the ships arrived, after several stops, @ cape of hope on 4 april 1840. on 21 april giant kelp macrocystis pyrifera found off marion island, no landfall made there or on crozet islands due harsh winds. on 12 may ships anchored @ christmas harbour 2 , half months, during plant species encountered james cook on kerguelen islands collected. on 16 august reached river derwent, remaining in tasmania until 12 november. week later flotilla stopped @ lord auckland s islands , campbell s island spring months.


large floating forests of macrocystis , durvillaea found until ships ran icebergs @ latitude 61° s. pack-ice met @ 68° s , longitude 175°. during part of voyage victoria land, mount erebus , mount terror discovered. after returning tasmania 3 months, flotilla went via sydney bay of islands, , stayed 3 months in new zealand collect plants there. after visiting other islands, ships returned cape of hope on 4 april 1843. @ end of journey specimens of fifteen hundred plant species had been collected , preserved.
