in 1960, kunstsammlung nordrhein-westfalen in düsseldorf established purchase of 88 works paul klee thompson s collection, brokered basel art dealer ernst beyeler. in 1960s, sold entire alberto giacometti collection of 70 works beyeler, , divided between kunsthaus zürich, basel kunstmuseum , kunstmuseum winterthur.
in may 1961, new york s solomon r. guggenheim museum held exhibition entitled 1 hundred paintings g. david thompson collection, works cézanne, monet, degas, josef albers, adja yunkers, braque, klee, legér, matisse, miró, mondrian, schwitters, , wols, picasso being represented, 12 works.
eventuallym thompson gave carnegie museum of art more 100 artworks, including paintings adolph gottlieb, josef albers, jean dubuffet, willem de kooning, alberto burri, jean metzinger, carlo carrà, francis picabia, david smith, henry moore, marino marini, isamu noguchi, jean-desiré-gustave courbet, adolphe monticelli, james lambdin, david blythe, , john kane. gave new york s museum of modern art (moma) works claes oldenburg, victor vasarely, jules olitski, henry moore, , pablo picasso s masterpiece 2 nudes (1906). thompson elected moma trustee in december 1960, having served on moma s collections committee, , held both posts until death.
after death, parke-bernet galleries in new york in march 1966 auctioned 90 paintings , 18 sculptures, in described beyond question important collection of 20th-century art ever offered @ auction @ 1 time .
