early in 1820s governors decided move new premises. acquired building lease of plot of ground 100-foot frontage @ grid reference tq308797 on east side of york road, lambeth. new building designed henry harrison , cost £3,000. on 22 september 1828, minutes record on friday morning patient delivered of son in new hospital , committee met day in new hospital first time. name westminster dropped title , institution incorporated royal charter in 1830 general lying-in hospital .
in 1879 thorough reconditioning carried out. new drainage system installed, laundry in basement converted store rooms, , new ward added. training school midwives , midwifery nurses established, , accommodate students new storey added each wing.
it in march 1879, joseph, afterwards lord lister, accepted office of consulting surgeon, , continued serve hospital in capacity , president until 1911. in 1880 sir john williams , sir francis champneys appointed physicians accoucheurs, , under auspices hospital first practise antiseptic midwifery in country.
in 1907 2 houses adjacent hospital on north side , known albany baths taken on nurses home. after 1914–18 war shortage of accommodation @ hospital became acute, , in 1930–33 new nurses home built on site of albany baths.
the hospital removed diocesan house, st albans, during 1939–45 war , old building received damage. was, however, re-opened in 1946. further reconditioning , modernisation have been carried out, structure remains substantially built on 120 years ago. under 1946 act included in st thomas hospital group.
the general lying-in closed in 1971 , fell dereliction. in later years appeared on english heritage s buildings @ risk register. restored , refurbished in 2003 @ cost of £4.27 million including grant guy s , st thomas charity.
the former hospital building opposite county hall has since been used guy s , st thomas nhs foundation trust training facility , offices.
at least 150,000 babies born @ hospital , said florence nightingale took personal interest in associated midwifery training school.
