piedmont boll weevils, 1996–2000


the intimidators franchise moved kannapolis in 1995 spartanburg, south carolina, had been class affiliate of philadelphia phillies since franchise s beginning in 1963. debate raged in kannapolis area on name team, team officials deciding call team piedmont phillies 1995 season.


a name-the-team contest in fall of 1995 drew thousands of entries, , team officials settled on boll weevil team s new mascot, indicative of kannapolis history textile mill town (kannapolis natives called lintheads ). piedmont boll weevils keep mascot until after 2000 season, when nascar racing legend dale earnhardt purchased share in team s ownership. name changed kannapolis intimidators, in honor of earnhardt s legendary nickname. during offseason team s parent club changed phillies chicago white sox, making intimidators third white sox farm team located in carolinas, following charlotte knights , winston-salem warthogs, called winston-salem dash.


earnhardt, drove #3 car in nascar, killed in accident @ daytona 500 in february 2001. following earnhardt s death, intimidators avoided assigning number 3 team members. team manager razor shines, slated wear #3, subsequently changed uniform number #43. team officially retired number 3 on may 15, 2002, in memory of former co-owner, similar los angeles angels of anaheim retiring number 26 (the 26th man) in honor of former owner gene autry.


the team s logo designed sam bass, has designed paint schemes , uniforms on many nascar, indycar, , nhra race cars.


the team plays in intimidators stadium (formerly fieldcrest cannon , later cmc-northeast stadium) in kannapolis. cannon still under construction when piedmont phillies began play in 1995. upon completion in late 1995, during winter, stadium seated 4,700 fans. stadium officially changed names on april 3, 2012 under new naming rights agreement 2012 season. 2016, naming rights deal quietly ended, name reverting intimidators stadium.


current or former major league baseball players pass through kannapolis include jimmy rollins , dave coggin of philadelphia phillies, jack egbert, gordon beckham, chris getz, brent morel , clayton richard of chicago white sox. marlon byrd, jorge padilla, ryan madson, , brett myers played 2000 piedmont boll weevils. also, nfl running ricky williams played boll weevils during late 1996 , 1997 seasons while playing college football university of texas.
