limburg cigar in wiesbaden central station
the southern section—known langenschwalbacher bahn (langenschwalbach railway)—was used in wilhelmine era spa traffic between world-famous spa of wiesbaden , women s spa of langenschwalbach. between them in chausseehaus summer resort hotel, restaurant , several rest homes. steep , winding line through eiserne hand gap required development of short carriages bogies, known langenschwalbacher. in 1892, langenschwalbach variant of class t 9 tender locomotive put operation, since slope found steep prussian t 3 locomotives used originally.
after first world war, aar valley railway crossed @ laufenselden free state bottleneck (freistaat flaschenhals), strip of land between american bridgehead of koblenz , french bridgehead @ mainz.
after second world war, line cut between zollhaus , kettenbach border between american , french occupation zone. special passes required travel on trains. later became border between hesse , rhineland-palatinate. 1960s on, line served accumulator railcars of class 517, known limburger zigarre (limburg cigars). in addition, line served silberling carriages, hauled class 216 diesel locomotives. on 25 september 1983, last scheduled passenger train ran between wiesbaden , bad schwalbach. on 28 september 1986, remaining northern section of line closed traffic; @ end still used uerdingen railbuses.
on 28 december 1985, nassauische touristik-bahn began operating tourist trains, hauled steam , diesel locomotives. these trains based in dotzheim station , operated hahn-wehen. 28 march 1991, line extended bad schwalbach , 29 april 1994 hohenstein. operation stopped in may 2007 when bridge damaged collision of road vehicle , because of several defective sets of points.
freight
the aar railway used transportation of mining products. schaefer lime works in oberneisen , michelbach steelworks (michelbacher hütte) in kettenbach located directly on line. while freight traffic on wiesbaden–bad schwalbach line discontinued @ same time passenger services on 24 september 1983, freight traffic ran diez bad schwalbach until 28 december 1990 , traffic hohenstein closed on 1 december 1992. last train between kettenbach , northern end of line ran on june 1999.
since 2007, operation of traffic resumed between wiesbaden ost station , henkell & co. (a sparkling wine manufacturer) @ former landesdenkmal station.
