the iranian navy rebuilt after being destroyed during anglo-soviet invasion of iran in world war ii. following world war ii, fleet began replacing destroyed warships destroyers, frigates , many smaller vessels, including powerboats , hovercraft, many of originated , uk, had played part in destroying of original equipment in world war ii. in 1970s, iran planned extend naval reach indian ocean; goal curtailed islamic revolution (1979), , ensuing western-backed, first persian gulf war (iran–iraq war) (1980–1988) left hampered in face of invasion.

mohammed-reza, last shah of iran ordered 4 modern general purpose destroyers united states , 8 modified kortenaer-class frigates royal schelde, both contracts canceled after iranian revolution. destroyers instead commissioned in u.s. navy kidd class, while construction of frigates had not yet started.


in terms of major surface ships, iran relies on alvand-class frigates new moudge-class frigates indigenously developed in iran , reverse engineered alvand class modern electronics, radar , armament. iran s 3 destroyers on 50 years old , kept in material reserve @ bushehr. navy not include capital ships; largest ships 5 frigates , 3 corvettes, of armed modern anti-ship missiles. main focus of iri navy seems on developing new frigates, corvettes , medium large fast boats capable of carrying modern, precision anti-ship missiles. 3 of 5 frigates (vosper mark 5), however, commissioned on 25 years ago , these ships have been updated chinese c-802 missiles. iran s 3 corvettes commissioned on 30 years ago; 1 (hamzeh) government yacht has been armed c-802 missiles well, deployed @ anzali on caspian sea. these 8 ships supported 3 russian built, ssk kilo-class attack submarines , ghadir , nahang-class mini submarines.
