a windmill constructed on site in 1796 john davis, irish convict. stone tower used grind wheat. subsided few years later , replaced windmill south. these structures gave rise name windmill hill area. in 1804 fort philip built on hill. supplied 4 6-pounder cannons , gunpowder magazine. powder magazine moved goat island in 1833, , fort philip partially demolished in 1850s. signal station built on eastern rampart of fort philip in 1847 many years called fort philip signal station. open public.


in 1858 sydney observatory built near signal station. on century played essential role in shipping, navigation, meteorology , timekeeping , astronomy. today building used museum , public observatory.


the national trust centre near park once military hospital. built hospital in 1825 closed in 1848 , became fort street model school. although fort street school still exists on observatory hill historic military hospital headquarters of national trust , several rooms available hire venue.


there rotunda in park dates 1912. has views of sydney harbour , used venue weddings.
