the movie starts in 1972 “plumbers” breaking watergate , subsequently getting arrested. 18 months later (december 1973), nixon s’ chief of staff, general alexander “al” haig (powers boothe) brings president richard “dick” m. nixon (anthony hopkins) tapes listen to. 2 men talk watergate scandal, , mess has become. after talking death of j. edgar hoover, nixon goes on curse out john dean james mccord , others involved in watergate. haig turns leave, nixon asks haig why hasn t been given pistol commit suicide honorable soldier.


nixon starts taping system trigger memories start series of time jumps. first, takes june 23, 1972 week after break in. meeting haldeman (james woods), ehrlichman (j.t. walsh) , dean (david hyde pierce). ehrlichman , dean leave, nixon speaks “smoking gun” tape haldeman.


the film covers aspect of nixon s life , political career. film implies nixon , wife abused alcohol , prescription medication. nixon s health problems, including bout of phlebitis , pneumonia during watergate crisis, shown in film, , various medicants attributed these health issues. movie hints @ kind of responsibility, real or imagined, nixon felt towards john f. kennedy assassination through references bay of pigs , implication being mechanisms set place invasion nixon during term dwight d. eisenhower s vice-president spiraled out of control culminate in assassination and, eventually, watergate.


the film ends nixon s resignation , famous departure lawn of white house on helicopter, army one. real life footage of nixon s funeral in yorba linda, california plays out on extended end credits, , living ex-presidents @ time, gerald ford, jimmy carter, ronald reagan, george h. w. bush, , then-president bill clinton, shown in attendance.
