the people of midian mentioned extensively in arabic qur’an. word madyan appears 10 times in it. people called ʾaṣḥabu l-ʾaykah (arabic: أصـحـابُ الأيـكـة‎, companions of wood ).


surah 9 (al-tawbah), verse 70 says has not story reached them of before them? - people of nūḥ (noah), ʿĀd , thamūd, people of ibrahim (abraham), dwellers [literally, comrades] of madyan (midian) , cities overthrown [i.e. people whom lūt (lot) preached], them came messengers clear proofs. not allah wronged them, used wrong themselves.


in surah 7 (al-ʾaʿrāf) madyan mentioned 1 of several peoples warned prophets repent lest judgment fall on them. story of madyan last, coming after of lot preaching people (referring destruction of cities of plain). madyan warned prophet shuʿaib repent of using false weights , measures , lying in wait along road. rejected shuʿayb, , consequently destroyed tremor (rajfa, v. 91). abdullah yusuf ali in commentary (1934) writes, fate of madyan people described in same terms of thamūd in verse 78 above. earthquake seized them night, , buried in own homes, no longer vex allah s earth. supplementary detail mentioned in [qur an] 26:189, punishment of day of overshadowing gloom, may understood mean shower of ashes , cinders accompanying volcanic eruption. day of terror drove them homes, , earthquake finished them. (the volcano hala- l badr in northwestern saudi arabia .
