the church centrally planned, having form of greek cross. has large central dome supported on 4 pendentives , buttressed on each side lower semi-dome on apse. beneath each semi-dome gallery supported on arcade.


the dome 70 m (230 ft) high, while main gold plated cross 12 m (39 ft) high, gives total of 82 m (269 ft) height church of saint sava. peak 134 m (440 ft) above sea level (64 m (210 ft) above sava river); therefore church holds dominant position in belgrade s cityscape , visible approaches city.


the church 91 m (299 ft) long east west, , 81 m (266 ft) north south. 70 m (230 ft) tall, main gold-plated cross extending 12 m (39 ft) more. domes have 18 more gold-plated crosses of various sizes, while bell towers have 49 bells of austrian bell foundry grassmayr.


it has surface area of 3,500 m (37,674 sq ft) on ground floor, 3 galleries of 1,500 m (16,146 sq ft) on first level, , 120 m (1,292 sq ft) gallery on second level. church can receive 10,000 faithful @ 1 time. choir gallery seats 800 singers. basement contains crypt, treasury of saint sava, , grave church of saint lazar hieromartyr, total surface of 1,800 m (19,375 sq ft) .


the facade in white marble , granite and, when finished, inner decorations of mosaics. central dome contain mosaic of christ pantocrator. give sense of monumental scale, eyes each 4 meters wide.
